“U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle struck down the federal mask mandate for airplanes and other modes of public transportation Monday, writing in a 59-page ruling that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had exceeded its authority and failed to follow proper rulemaking procedures.
That decision, which led to U.S. airlines and other transportation hubs to promptly drop their mask mandates, has elicited mixed responses from travelers and concern from experts.
The ABA recommends that nominees for federal judgeships have at least 12 years of experience practicing law — whereas Mizelle was nominated for her current position only eight years after passing the bar.

Meanwhile, Thomas is married to someone who is extremely politically active on the far right–Virginia ‘Ginni’ Thomas, an American attorney and conservative activist.

Gaffney and others submitted an amicus brief to the court in 2017 in support of the Trump administration’s travel ban, arguing that “the challenge of Islam must be confronted.”
Shockingly, Thomas did not recuse himself from the case given the clear financial conflict. He never even disclosed the $200,000 paid to his wife despite being required to report the source of a spouse’s income as part of his annual financial disclosures, according to The New Yorker. Thomas would later join his fellow four conservative justices in voting to uphold Trump’s shameful Muslim ban.
In February, The New York Times Magazine reported that Ginni Thomas served on the board of a secretive right-wing group called CNP Action. In November 2020, it circulated a “November ‘action steps’ document” instructing its members in the days after the election “to pressure Republican lawmakers into challenging the election results and appointing alternate slates of electors,” according to the report.
But when former President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to block the House Jan. 6 committee from obtaining hundreds of pages of White House records from the National Archives, Thomas was the sole justice to vote against the House investigators.
Then on Monday, in an interview with a conservative blog, Ginni Thomas admitted to having attended the “Stop the Steal” rally at the Ellipse on Jan. 6, 2021. She admitted to being in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, thereby endorsing that day’s Trump-led rally to overturn the election, but she claimed to have left before Trump addressed the crowd because she “got cold.”
To recap: These reports showed that the wife of a Supreme Court justice not only took undisclosed money from an activist who filed a brief in front of the court, but that she was also part of a campaign to try to overturn the 2020 election result and attended the rally that preceded the attack on the Capitol. And as Ginni Thomas herself helpfully explained in Monday’s interview: “Like so many married couples, we share many of the same ideals, principles, and aspirations for America.”
Ridiculously, Clarence Thomas wants us to believe he can carry on as an associate justice and remain above the fray. In September, speaking at the University of Notre Dame, he railed against growing criticisms of the court’s partisan behavior. If he really wanted to avoid looking like a politician, why allow his wife’s political activism and income streams to have even the appearance of an impact on his decisions instead of recusing himself?”

Watergate reporter Bob Woodward reported on Thursday, “Virginia Thomas, a conservative activist married to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, repeatedly pressed White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in a series of urgent text exchanges in the critical weeks after the vote, according to copies of the messages obtained by The Washington Post and CBS News.”
“The messages – 29 in all – reveal an extraordinary pipeline between Virginia Thomas, who goes by Ginni, and President Donald Trump’s top aide during a period when Trump and his allies were vowing to go to the Supreme Court in an effort to negate the election results,” The Post reported. “The messages, which do not directly reference Justice Thomas or the Supreme Court, show for the first time how Ginni Thomas used her access to Trump’s inner circle to promote and seek to guide the president’s strategy to overturn the election results – and how receptive and grateful Meadows said he was to receive her advice.”
Robert Costa, who co-wrote The Post story with Woodward, wrote. “Woodward and I both see this as an unprecedented entanglement between a top official in the Exec Branch and the spouse of a Justice. They are privately discussing strategy, lawyers, managing WH staff, and conspiracy theories.”
Adam Blickstein, who worked in public affairs for the Department of Justice, alluded to the situation when he noted, “We now have more information about Ginny Thomas’ illegal attempt to overturn the 2020 election than we do about Clarence Thomas’ current medical condition.”
“One of the most important questions in politics right now: what did Clarence Thomas know, and when did he know it?” he asked.
Election law lawyer Rick Hasen described it as “astounding” and political scientist Norman Ornstein responded, “Clarence Thomas should resign.”
Attorney and Daily Beast columnist Wajahat Ali did not think Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) should wait for Thomas to resign, counseling that “Democrats should impeach Clarence Thomas.” Former public defender Kumar Roa agreed, saying “Impeach Clarence Thomas.”
The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) said, “this seems like a big deal.”

“After talking with her ‘best friend,’ which is how the Thomases refer to one another, Justice Thomas’s wife militates relentlessly for the president’s chief of staff to overturn a presidential election,” Mayer wrote.
Slate legal correspondent Mark Joseph Stern was shocked when he went through the text messages.
“Ginni Thomas urged Mark Meadows to overturn the 2020 election by any means necessary—while her husband was ruling on cases attempting to overturn the election. A truly extraordinary level of corruption,” he wrote. “Look at the absolutely deranged conspiracy theories Ginni Thomas pushed. Fringe doesn’t begin to cover it. She promoted conspiracy theories from a Sandy Hook truther plus QAnon stuff.”

“Carlson represents only a fraction of Fox News’ coverage of the convoy. Matt Gertz of Media Matters pointed out on Friday that the network’s coverage of the convoy has skyrocketed in the past week, with commentators pushing for an American version of the protest. Some have even called for truckers to shut down the Super Bowl . The prospect of such a shutdown is far-fetched, but NPR on Thursday obtained a Department of Homeland Security memo warning that tuckers could block roads in American cities in the coming weeks. The memo mentioned the Super Bowl as a potential target.
So, no, the Republicans politicians and conservative commentators who spent the early part of the winter melting down over supply chain issues don’t care about how the blockade is disrupting commerce. They raised hell about how restrictions meant to prevent a pandemic from killing people were slowing the gears of the economy, but this is fine. In fact, it’s encouraged. Some Republicans are using their power to help ensure the convoy is well-funded.

Banning Books Stifles Curiosity, and Ultimately Imperils Society
In recent weeks, hundreds of books have either been challenged, barred, or face proposals to get pulled from schools, curricula, and libraries across the country. They’ve been deemed “controversial” for a variety of reasons. Some say they contain “objectionable language”, they’re “too sexually explicit”, or they fall falsely accused of being about Critical Race Theory. In some cases, the problem with these books is that their contents just might make a young reader or, more likely their parents, uncomfortable. There are a host of arguments made against the books – some are simply prudish, but several are clearly racist or homophobic or transphobic, and most of it is anti-intellectual: the same sort that gets us climate deniers and anti-vaxxers. Simply put, banning books is bad. It deprives people young and old of exposure to ideas, concepts, and world views that are not their own. It stifles curiosity. It perpetuates stereotypes. And when you dampen curiosity, you weaken our ability to think critically – to know when you are being fooled. Banning books is going to make us into a stupid society, vulnerable to misinformation and manipulation. We are less informed when our choices about the range of information we consume is arbitrarily limited. Sometimes it feels like there’s too much to fight for and it’s hard to win.

“It’s important during this dark time to remember that banning books and threatening teachers isn’t new. Former high school history teacher, Ursula Wolfe-Rocca, compiled an excellent critical review of McCarthyism for the Zinn Education Project. She reminds us of the long history of targeting anti-racist, queer, leftist, and anti-war organizers and educators.
When I read about the current anti-Critical Race Theory push in schools, I also think of educators more recently who risked their jobs in order to promote conversations about equity.
As we consider our strategies to push back against rising fascism today, we would do well to remember its historical roots in this country. In doing so, we can also find examples of educators who resisted. While silencing critical thought in American schools is not new, certain aspects of this moment feel uniquely dangerous.
Across the country, Republican-controlled states are passing laws that are limiting access to voting, gerrymandering districts, and changing the way votes are counted and certified. Without federal intervention, we will enter into a dismal new period in the United States. The same folks who want to ban books and anti-racist teaching will control our government at every level.
What Can Educators Do?
To fight fascism from your classroom, you can’t do it alone. In her dedication of We Do This ‘Til We Free Us, Mariame Kaba shares wisdom from her father, “Everything worthwhile is done with others.” Practically every significant social change in history was accomplished through collective action. Joining a community means access to resources, wisdom, and support. And if something goes wrong, you won’t be alone.
As you fight fascism in your classroom, remember to do what you do best. When people disagree with your politics, they will try to attack your skill and expertise. Don’t let them. Come to your class prepared. Make space for student-led discussion and inquiry, but ground your teaching in facts. The Morningside Center offers ten guidelines for teaching about controversial topics.
Our job as educators has always been to help students make sense of the world. That way they make a difference in it. Students need to learn about the history and presence of racism in the United States. They also need an understanding of the Constitution, as well as fights over democracy that have taken place in the United States. Classrooms must be places where students learn this context. Only then can they comprehend and fight back against the rising threat of fascism”.

“My name is Anthony Crawford. I’m a teacher in Oklahoma, and I’m also part of a group of educators and students represented by the ACLU in a lawsuit against the state’s law, HB 1775 – which severely restricts learning and talking about race and gender in the classroom.
You see, Oklahoma, where I live and teach, is one of nine states that passed classroom censorship bills last year that try to silence conversations about race and gender – bills that chill students’ and educators’ First Amendment right to talk about issues that impact our everyday lives.
State lawmakers and school boards across the country have also made moves to remove books by Black, LGBTQ, and other authors discussing race, gender, and sexuality from curriculums amidst the ongoing debate about teaching “critical race theory” in schools.
But this isn’t the first time America has tried to eradicate certain truths out of history books. Read my story in full here and you’ll get a bigger picture of what I’m talking about.
When I was a junior in high school, for instance, I was kicked out of AP History class just for asking when we were going to learn about Black history. It was Black History Month, Anthony.
Later, when I became a teacher, I made it my goal to equip my students with a curriculum that incorporates readings on race and gender – that gives them an accurate picture of history, that helps them understand what kind of society they live in, and how this reality came into being.
Some aspects of Black history can be hard to talk about, but learning about it builds students’ confidence and empowers them to take life into their own hands.
That’s also one of the reasons why I’ve chosen to defy HB 1775 by not altering my teaching – and why, again, I hope you’ll dive into my story on this urgent fight against censorship alongside the ACLU right now.
After all, the more of us there are who are informed and speaking out – the stronger we can be for our students and our right to learn.

But public opinion is shifting, and today even oil and gas companies publicly admit that climate change demands action. So why does climate denialism continue to influence U.S. politics? Here’s a look into who is funding the movement, and why denial is mainly a U.S. problem.
For the first time ever, global temperatures are expected to breach a level that is 1.5-degrees celsius higher than pre-industrial times within the next five years. That’s according to a new report by the World Meteorological Organization. It’s a threshold scientists have been warning about for years. This is a temperature rise we’ve all been warned to avoid at all costs – it is essentially the doomsday threshold for global warming. When you think of climate change or global warming, you might think about those searing hot summer days when the temperature exceeds 100-degrees Fahrenheit.
Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels.
New data shows that climate change is using this natural phenomenon to strengthen itself.

Trump was the worst President for the environment in history. He has unraveled protections that were designed to save thousands of lives and billions of dollars. He perpetrated the largest attack on climate action in history.

Trump and most of his cabinet appointees do not believe the opinions of many scientists that climate change will have catastrophic impacts nor that carbon dioxide is a primary contributor to climate change. Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris climate accord, leaving the U.S. the only nation that is not part of the agreement. He avoided environmental discussions at both the 44th G7 summit held in Canada and the 45th G7 summit held in France by departing early from these conferences. In September 2019, the Trump administration replaced the Obama-era Clean Power Plan with the Affordable Clean Energy rule, which does not cap emissions. In April 2020, Trump issued his new vehicle emissions standards, which are projected to result in an additional billion tons of carbon dioxide, increasing annual U.S. emissions by about one-fifth.
The administration rewrote the EPA’s pollution-control policies—including on chemicals known to be serious health risks—particularly benefiting the chemicals industry, and repealed the Clean Water Rule in September 2019. A 2018 analysis reported that the Trump administration’s rollbacks and proposed reversals of environmental rules would likely “cost the lives of over 80,000 US residents per decade and lead to respiratory problems for many more than 1 million people.”

People are now dying from COVID-19 at a rate 3 times higher in counties where former President Donald Trump won at least 60% of the vote than in counties where President Joe Biden won a similar percentage, according to a New York Times analysis of the data.
And that partisan gap which didn’t emerge until the widespread availability of vaccines in the spring of 2021 — has consistently widened over the last 5 months.
The gap, according to the Times, accelerated at its fastest rate yet in October, coming out to 25 COVID deaths per 100,000 residents in counties where Trump won more than 60% of the vote, versus 7.8 deaths per 100k in counties where Biden did the same.

Jan. 6 committee investigating the U.S. Capitol attack holds second day of testimony — 6/13/22
A bipartisan House select committee on Monday begins detailing the initial findings from its investigation of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, keeping its focus squarely on former President Donald Trump.
The second hearing will center on the push by Trump and his allies to spread false claims of sweeping election fraud following the then-president’s loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 contest. The committee said it will demonstrate that Trump knew he lost the race, but nevertheless worked to falsely convince “huge portions of the U.S. population that fraud had stolen the election from him,” Vice Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said last week.
Witnesses will testify on two panels during Monday’s hearing. The first will feature Chris Stirewalt, the former Fox News political editor who came under fire from Trump’s supporters after Fox called Arizona for Biden before other outlets on Election Day 2020.
Former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien was slated to speak, as well — but less than an hour before the hearing was set to start at 10 a.m. ET, the committee announced that Stepien would not attend “due to a family emergency.”
Stepien’s lawyer will appear and make a statement on his behalf, the committee said, adding that the event would be delayed by about 30 to 45 minutes as a result. Stepien is reportedly currently advising Cheney’s Trump-endorsed Republican primary challenger Harriet Hageman.
The second panel is set to include testimony from election attorney Benjamin Ginsberg, former Philadelphia city commissioner Al Schmidt and BJay Pak, former U.S. attorney for the northern district of Georgia.

Cassidy Hutchinson, the former White House aide, made waves last week when the committee shared video of her naming multiple Republican lawmakers who allegedly sought presidential pardons in the wake of the Capitol riot.
The revelations from her taped deposition marked the climax of the panel’s fifth public hearing on its initial findings from a nearly yearlong investigation into the attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6, 2021. The committee said last week that its final two hearings would come in July, but on Monday afternoon it abruptly announced the latest hearing “to present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony.”
The committee blames Trump for conjuring the violent crowd and sending them toward the Capitol, and has strongly suggested he broke the law in doing so. Lawyers for Trump since the Jan. 6 attack have tried to argue his encouraging supporters to walk to the Capitol was political speech, and that he was not in control of the crowd nor responsible for the riot at the Capitol. “The evidence confirms that this was not a spontaneous call to action, but rather was a deliberate strategy decided upon in advance by the President,” Rep. Stephanie Murphy said.
- Concerns about plans: A text message between a key organizer of the Jan. 6 rally and a top Trump ally — Kylie Kremer and Mike Lindell respectively — shows Kremer was concerned about making public well-established plans for a march from the Ellipse to the Capitol. “It can also not get out about the march because I will be in trouble with the national park service and all the agencies but POTUS is going to call for it ‘unexpectedly,’” she wrote to Lindell. Separately, Brad Parscale, Trump’s former campaign manager, privately said on Jan. 6, 2021, that Trump was “asking for civil war” and that he felt “guilty for helping him win,” according to text messages.
- Roger Stone and extremist groups: The committee zeroed in on Roger Stone’s connections to the far-right organizations, saying that “leaders in both the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers worked with Trump allies.” Figures in Trump’s circle, including Roger Stone and former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, hired the Oath Keepers as private security details and rallied with the Proud Boys, Raskin said. Stone also used encrypted chats to communicate with the leaders of both groups, according to the committee.
- Conceding the election: In clips from Cipollone’s deposition, he agreed with other Trump officials that there was not sufficient evidence of election fraud. Cipollone specifically testified that he believed Trump should’ve conceded the election. Many other Trump White House officials shared the view that once the litigation on alleged voting fraud ended and the Electoral College met, the election was over — including Ivanka Trump and former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

Government spending is literally, by definition, the things that government does to make our lives better. People have been tricked into thinking that government spending is somehow bad. The billionaires and giant corporations spread this nonsense around because they are greedy and just want their taxes lower. The top income tax rate used to be more than 90 percent and the top corporate tax rate used to be more than 50 percent. That was back when we built this country’s great infrastructure, had good schools and defended the world against the Soviet Union. We also had higher economic growth and a growing middle class.
Government spending does not “take money out of the economy.” In fact it puts money into the economy, creates jobs and lays the foundation for future prosperity. The decline in government spending shown in the charts above is the reason that the economy remains sluggish and jobs are still hard to get. Just look at that chart showing what the stimulus spending did for the job situation. But since the stimulus ended, Republicans have obstructed every effort to continue to use our government to help our economy.

October 19, 2023 – “Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to commit election interference in Fulton County Georgia Superior Court as part of a deal reached with prosecutors.
Powell agreed to serve six years of probation and pay a $6,000 fine and $2,700 in restitution to the state of Georgia. She also agreed to submit an apology letter to the citizens of Georgia and to testify at related court proceedings.

In my opinion, Donald Trump is a “segmental thinker”. He lives in the moment and is attracted by a shiny object and forgets everything else.
The main thing that I am worried about is the complacency of the public and specifically the country’s leaders and law enforcement and other people in positions of authority and power who are still letting Trump run wild. Trump is extremely dangerous. Trump does not believe in laws and rules. He wants to be a lawless dictator. This is why I continue to share my conclusion, based on the evidence, that Donald Trump appears to be psychotic. He is a person who is detached from reality. Even with the trials and other pressures, Trump is not capable of breaking down, of being cowed and/or broken. If anything, Trump will go down in flames if he goes down at all. Trump is an extreme narcissist who will destroy anyone who has ever done anything to hurt him, to oppose him, or defy him.
