Indiana’s attorney general has dropped a lawsuit that accused the state’s largest hospital system of violating patient privacy laws when a doctor told a newspaper that a 10-year-old Ohio girl had traveled to Indiana for an abortion.

A federal judge last week approved Attorney General Todd Rokita’s request to dismiss his lawsuit, which the Republican had filed last year against Indiana University Health and IU Healthcare Associates, The Indianapolis Star reported.

The suit accused the hospital system of violating HIPAA, the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and a state law, for not protecting patient information in the case of a 10-year-old rape victim who traveled to Indiana to receive abortion drugs.

Dr. Caitlin Bernard ‘s attorneys later that she shared no personally identifiable information about the girl, and no such details were reported in the Star’s story on July 1, 2022, but it became a flashpoint in the abortion debate days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade that June.

A federal judge in Indianapolis initially granted IU Health’s motion to dismiss the case in June, prompting Rokita to file an amended complaint in July. His office then sought the case’s dismissal last week, writing that the state’s initial complaints have been satisfied by actions IU Health has taken since The Star first reported on the girl’s case.

It was, thanks to Trump, that for the first time in American history, rioters stormed a democratic institution — the U.S. Capitol — to stop the certification of an election.

There are no lessons learned. Trump leads national and state Republican presidential primary polls, and his rhetoric has gone from off-the-cuff remarks to straight-up violent. He’s suggested a military general he appointed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff should have been executed. Trump wrote on his social media website Truth Social that Gen. Mark Milley’s phone call, done in coordination with Trump’s defense secretary, to China after Jan. 6 was “an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH.”

Trump also posted a photo on Truth Social of a law clerk who works for the New York judge presiding over his civil fraud trial, an invitation for violence against the judiciary. That prompted the judge to issue a gag order barring Trump from speaking publicly about his staff. Trump told Republicans in California that shoplifters should be shot, raising the obvious comparison with a strongman Trump personally praised: Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, whose war on drugs embraced extrajudicial killings of thousands of suspects without a trial. Trump has also vowed to investigate media outlets he sees as enemies, showing his disregard for the Constitution and freedom of press. He’s called on Republicans to shutdown the federal government to stall the criminal cases against him and urged the House to impeach President Joe Biden because the “lowlifes Impeached me TWICE.”

As have authoritarians before him, Trump sees the state’s machinery as a mere conduit to his own interests and retribution, which he masks under the guise of making America great again or draining the swamp. The problem isn’t just that Americans have become numb to his remarks. Many see violence and the eroding of the institutions that keep a democracy strong as justified means to achieve the greatness that the former president sells them. It’s become part of the GOP platform to defund federal agencies like the FBI, which also investigates local crimes that Republicans themselves promise to curtail if they return to the White House.

Few conservatives seem bothered when Trump vows to use the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate his political rivals If Trump is a symptom of our polarized times, he’s made the annihilation of one’s opponents a righteous cause. A pastor’s opening prayers at an Iowa Trump rally over the weekend said, “We ask that those who stand against [Trump] be put to silence.” If reelected, could Trump incite another Jan. 6, or something worse? That’s a possibility that few of his rivals in the presidential primary publicly contemplate. Instead, many of them escalate

Trump’s violent rhetoric. If the former president considered bombing drug labs in Mexico, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he wants to send military troops into the country to fight drug cartels. Republicans who call out Trump’s threat to democracy are losing ground in their party. That’s dangerous because an emboldened Trump back in the White House, seeking revenge for his perceived victimization, could do more damage than he did in his first go-round.

Key to the agenda is purging the government of nonpartisan government officials sworn to uphold the Constitution and replacing them with sycophants loyal only to Trump. The entire federal government would be placed under direct presidential control. This includes the Department of Justice, which Trump has vowed to use to prosecute his political enemies.

The purge would pave the way for a Trump administration to impose a radical, repressive and regressive regime — one that could endure long beyond Trump’s constitutionally mandated term or even his lifetime. A vice president, Mike Pence, and officials committed to the rule of law in the departments of Justice, Defense, and Homeland Security thwarted the attempted Trump coup in 2020 and 2021.

In a second term, there won’t be any officials who place the rule of law above Trumpism.

The agenda proposed in Project 2025 is grisly:

• Dismantling the foundations of immigration policy, tearing families apart, turning away desperate refugees and stripping away protections for Dreamers
• Undermining climate change mitigation, environmental justice and the transition to clean energy

• Slashing health care insurance, putting 18 million Americans at risk of losing coverage entirely, killing the drug price provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act and Affordable Care Act’s protections for preexisting conditions.
• Shutting down access to safe abortions, contraception and other reproductive health care, putting women’s lives at risk

As disturbing as this agenda is, the most alarming and repellent policy proposal contained within Project 2025 is the restructuring of the federal government, eliminating the kind of public servants who stopped Trump from completely disassembling the Department of Veterans Affairs, overcame his resistance to expelling Russian spies, deterred him from shooting racial justice protesters, derailed his plan to deploy the military against migrants and kick undocumented children out of schools and deflected his suggestion to drop nuclear bombs into the eyes of hurricanes.

There will be no stopgaps, no checks and balances, no one to say no when he tries to subvert the next election.

Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

2. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause – The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

3. Supremacy of the Military – Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

5. Controlled Mass Media – Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

6. Obsession with National Security – Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

7. Religion and Government are Intertwined – Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.

8. Corporate Power is Protected – The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

9. Labor Power is Suppressed – Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

10. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

11. Obsession with Crime and Punishment – Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

12. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

13. Manipulate & Control elections – Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate & control elections.

14. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Trump’s Lie about January 6th: “Nancy Pelosi, if you watched the news from two days ago, on tape to her daughter who is a documentary filmmaker they say, but she’s saying, ‘Oh no, it’s my responsibility. I was responsible for this,’ because I offered them 10,000 soldiers or National Guard, and she turned them down.”

Fact Check: Nancy Pelosi never claimed to be responsible for January 6th. She can be seen on film during the January 6th attack on the Capitol asking local officials to deploy National Guard troops to the Capitol when it became clear Trump wasn’t going to deploy the D.C. National Guard.

Pelosi’s daughter is a documentary filmmaker who was making a film about her mother in 2021, and was filming in the Capitol on January 6th. She followed her mother and other members of Congress into a secure facility after the Capitol was evacuated. The footage can be seen in the Pelosi documentary, Pelosi in the House, on HBO.

The Speaker of the House has no authority over the National Guard. The Speaker of the House is not in the military chain of command, and does not have any authority to “turn down” National Guard troops that are ordered to defend the Capitol by the President.

Trump’s Lie about Abortion: “They’re radical because they will take the life of the child in the eighth month, the ninth month, and even after birth. After birth, if you look at the Governor of Virginia, he was willing to do this. He said, ‘we’ll put the baby aside, I will determine what we will do with the baby,’ meaning will kill the baby.”

Fact Check: Democratic Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia never said that. Here is what Northam said:

“If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”

Northam’s words were taken out of context. He was referring to palliative care of infants who have no chance of survival after birth: making them as comfortable as possible for the final hours of their life at the wishes of the parents, not intentionally killing them. Killing an infant after it is born is considered murder in all 50 states. No law has been proposed in any state to make infanticide legal.

Trump’s Lie about his N.Y. Criminal Case: “I didn’t have sex with a porn star.”

Fact Check: Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts in New York for falsifying business records related to reimbursement payments to his then lawyer Michael Cohen, who paid adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about her sexual relationship with Donald Trump before the 2016 election.

A jury of Trump’s peers found that he did, in fact, have sex with a porn star, and illegally tampered with financial records to keep his hush money payment about their affair a secret.
