All 24 Democratic state governors condemned President Trump’s suggestion that he would “nationalize elections” in a joint statement released Thursday.
“Voting in free and fair elections is the foundation of our democracy,” the governors wrote. “All Americans deserve to have their voices heard as they exercise their right to vote, without interference from the federal government.”
Trump made the suggestion on Monday during an episode of former FBI Director Dan Bongino’s podcast, where he said the federal government should control elections in several states.
“The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over. We should take over the voting in at least 15 places,’” Trump said. “The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.”
The Democratic governors called Trump’s claim about nationalizing elections “an undemocratic attempt to silence the American people who are rejecting his costly and divisive agenda.”
“While Trump whines about losing a free and fair election, he’s now openly talking about rigging one in the future,” the group wrote. “Democratic governors won’t let that happen.”
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the vice chair of the Democratic Governors Association, vowed to stand up against any efforts from the federal government to take over Michigan’s elections.
“Our nation has a long, proud history of running decentralized federal elections,” Whitmer said in a video uploaded to the social platform X on Wednesday. “It’s a system that was designed by our Founding Fathers to protect us against those who would try to take and hold power illegitimately or by force.
