U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday spoke on the U.S. Senate floor to expose the unprecedented corruption of the Trump administration’s first six weeks in office. Murphy condemned Trump’s normalization of pay-to-play politics, where billionaire donors dictate policy and taxpayer money is funneled into the pockets of the president, Elon Musk, and the corporate elite.
“In the first six weeks of the Trump presidency, Trump and Elon Musk and their billionaire friends have engaged in a stunning rampage of open public corruption,” Murphy said. “It’s not fundamentally different than what happened in Russia. These are efforts to steal from the American people to enrich themselves. And their strategy is to do it all out in the open, to do it at such a dizzying pace that the country just gets overwhelmed or anesthetized or dulled into a sense that we just all have to accept the corruption – or, maybe more charitably, that this is just how government works, that government is just corrupt, and so the fact that it’s happening out in the open instead of happening secretly, well, it’s really nothing new.”
Murphy laid out more than 20 examples of blatant corruption from just the first six weeks of the Trump presidency, including:
- The launch of Trump’s meme coin, enabling anyone seeking to influence the administration to privately funnel money directly to the president.
- The gutting and manipulation of watchdog agencies like the NLRB, CFPB, and OSHA to benefit Elon Musk, the billionaires in Trump’s cabinet, and other elites.
- The Eric Adams quid pro quo and the weaponization of the DOJ to reinforce a system of political retribution and favoritism.
- The use of government contracts and stock deals to reward Trump’s allies, enriching them through taxpayer-funded opportunities and further consolidating political power.
“This is how democracies die,” Murphy continued. “Democracies die when the very powerful people steal from us so regularly, so openly, so unapologetically, that we come to believe that it’s normal. And listen, I understand that many Americans may think that all of this stuff just used to happen quietly, and the only difference is that Trump and Musk are just putting it all out in the open. And I’m not saying that there haven’t been instances of corruption. Democrats and Republicans in this body have been accused of, and convicted of, acts of corruption. It has been a fact of life in American politics for a long time. But never before has the corruption happened this openly or this frequently. And so I lay it all out for you this afternoon in the hopes that it is not too late for us to decide to stand up, as a body and as a nation, to say that this isn’t okay.”

Trump’s DOJ Sues ALL FEDERAL JUDGES IN MARYLAND For Two-Day Pause on Deportations
The Trump administration’s latest escalation in its attempt to undermine federal courts and erode due process protections the US District Court of Maryland’s order issued last month initiated an automatic two-day stay on habius corpus challenges in part to preserve the status quo and ensure petitioners are able to participate in proceedings and access legal counsel. In its complaint, the DOJ characterized the order as a particularly egregious example of judicial overreach interfering with executive branch prerogatives the DOJ claimed the standing order has prevented federal immigration authorities from enforcing immigration law actually it’s prevented immigration authorities from violating the due process rights of individuals they are snatching up.
The Department of Justice asked the same court it is suing to declare the order unlawful and issue an injunction blocking the judges from enforcing it though the department filed the lawsuit in the District Court of Maryland the DOJ asked all of its judges to recuse themselves from the case and that a judge from another district hear the case all judges with the District Court of Maryland were named as defendants because they all must approve before standing court orders are issued. Defendants include Judge Paul Asinis, the judge presiding over Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s lawsuit challenging his wrongful removal from the US and imprisonment in El Salvador earlier this year legal scholars said that the DOJ’s lawsuit raises concerns over the protections judges have from lawsuits over their official acts such as issuing orders in cases. Adam Bonica, a professor of political science at Stanford, noted that the DOJ is in essence arguing that judicial review inflicts irreparable harm on the government. Why? Because in the first 100 days of Trump’s term, he has engaged in more unlawful and unconstitutional conduct than any president in the last 100 years, probably more than all presidents combined.
“This lawsuit involves yet another regrettable example of the unlawful use of equitable powers to restrain the Executive,” the complaint reads. “Specifically, Defendants have instituted an avowedly automatic injunction against the federal government, issued outside the context of any particular case or controversy, by promulgating a standing order that requires the court clerk to automatically enter an injunction against removing or changing the legal status of any alien detained in Maryland who files a habius petition”.
Essentially the federal judges in Maryland are putting in place a two-day pause because Donald Trump’s executive branch has been consistently violating the due process rights of immigrants. This is nothing more than an attempt to undermine the authority of the Federal Judiciary and to continue to be able to violate the due process rights of notice and opportunity to be heard by everyone, including immigrants.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement announcing the complaint that Trump’s executive authority has been undermined “since the first hours of his presidency” by scores of injunctions. “The American people elected President Trump to carry out his policy agenda: this pattern of judicial overreach undermines the democratic process and cannot be allowed to stand,” she said.

Bondi’s record as the head of the Justice Department is being slammed by close to 70 law professors, attorneys and former Florida Supreme Court justices via a Florida Bar ethics complaint filed Thursday, according to the Herald.
In the complaint, the group alleges Bondi has breached ethical duties in her current role and that “serious professional misconduct that threatens the rule of law and the administration of justice” has been carried out by the attorney general, the Herald reported.

The letter, which has garnered more than 4,300 signatures from individuals and organizations, features several notable conservative and progressive signatories – including former judges, Members of Congress, senior political appointees from both Republican and Democratic, administrations, private law firms and legal organizations.

Bondi responded, “I haven’t seen the file. … I haven’t looked at anything. Senator Mazie Hirono, Democrat from Hawaii, asked the nominee to reject Trump’s characterization of supporters arrested in the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol as “hostages” or “patriots,” but Bondi refused, claiming, “I am not familiar with that statement.”
